Dance Is a Sport

An essay by Katie Dunning

Dance is a sport. An actually extremely difficult sport. How do I support this claim? Well, this is what I'm here to explain. Dance requires much physical strength, while also requiring flexibility, talent, grace, mental strength, strategy, ability to apply corrections, etc. Most other sports require only strategy, physical strength, and talent.

Another reason dance is a sport is because of competitions. Although not used in world renowned competitions, such as The Olympics, dance is competed at a very high level. Most competative dancers dance a shockingly large amount of hours each week, not to mention each day. Most competative dance companies also compete about every weekend at competitions that are sometimes even out of state.

One sad thing about competative dancers are eating disorders. Many dancers are told they need to diet and eat less, which means many of these athletes are competing at a very high level with little to no energy from food. It's very sad, but this issue is also present in activities such as modeling, gymnastics, figure skating, etc.
